What we do

The AGNES is a not-for-profit think tank of African experts and practitioners that provides evidence-based technical support to the African Governments and the African Group of Negotiators (AGN) that enhance effective engagement in the international and national climate change policy formulation, implementation and decision making. For example, the AGNES played a critical role at the 23rd Conference of the Parties (COP23) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held in November 2017 in Bonn, Germany resulting in the adoption of the two historic decisions on agriculture (Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture) and gender (Gender Action Plan).

Past/Upcoming Events

The AGNES is in the process of establishing an African Experts Team to lead the process of unpacking this Special Report in the context of Africa and prepare policy briefs that will inform the African common position during the Dialogue of the Oceans which will be held during the SBSTA 52, later in 2021

Dialogue on Conceptual Framework for Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) and Methodologies for Assessing Adequacy and Effectiveness of Adaptation Efforts and Resilience

This is the 5th in a series of meetings that AGNES and partners has been undertaking to develop a robust framework for assessing the adequacy and effectiveness of adaptation efforts.

Writeshop to Prepare Policy Briefs for the African Ministers of Agriculture Conference

Africa is vulnerable to climate change, not only because of its high exposure to climate change, but also because many African communities lack the capacity to respond or adapt to the impacts of climate change.

What People
Say About Us

The quality of the modules taught at the Climate Leadership Program has helped me tremendously in structuring how to better educate the people at the grassroots in understanding climate change issues, policies being formulated and how their local solutions can help them in adapting to these changes.

It was great! It enhanced my skills on Climate diplomacy and Negotiations .

I would like to extend my gratitude for the AGNES Climate Leadership course. I was a member of the cohort IV trainees. I was seeking to get into the Climate Change field and It is through this training that I got the opportunity to really delve into and enrich my knowledge accordingly. After the course, I got a job opportunity as a Carbon Project Developer (with ecosecurities- a carbon offsets development company) which I greatly attribute to the knowledge I acquired from AGNES. In particular, my familiarity with the COP processes, Paris Agreement (specifically Article 6), MRV etc., and the pan-african nature of the course, gave me a competitive advantage. I am enjoying my new job and can't help but feel indebted to your team for availing this opportunity. I pray it continues to benefit more professionals across the region. Thank you.

Thank you for linking me with Agnes, that certificate is the key that made me an intern at REMA ( Rwanda environment management authority). Now I have officially started the journey of my career. I hope we'll have more connection between us and many opportunities from you!! I want to grow in this career.

Let me also take this opportunity to thank you and AGNES for organizing this wonderful and addictive course. I learned a lot of things from the course facilitators (the experts) and as well our follow-up discussions. Surely, this was among the best online classes I’ve ever attended! Thank you Michael once again for your wonderful coordination.
